I Wrote a Thing With Teeth
A while back I had a very awesome opportunity come across my instant messenger window. It turned out that a group of Gears of War fans were putting together a fan film. One of the project’s key players sent me some notes on story and character ideas and asked my thoughts. It seemed like it had a lot of potential to be a very cool project. It’s no secret that I’m a big Gears of War fan, and I’ve wanted to kick some narrative dirt around in that universe for a long time, so I essentially browbeat them into letting me write up the screenplay for the film. I’m certainly no professional writer, and the screenplay I put together is a long way from being perfect – both in function and form. But despite it’s flaws, it’s a story I’m proud of.
The film will be coming out today and in light of that I wanted to share my final draft of the screenplay with the handful of people who might care to give it a read. It takes place in the weeks after the sinking of Jacinto at the end of Gears of War 2, and just before the COG evacuate the mainland in favor of the island of Vectes. Here’s the opener…
EXT – A GRAVEL ROAD – DAY
A gravel road runs alongside a railroad track, and together, they lead to a walled-off plaza in front of a warehouse. The skies are cloudy, and ash drifts slowly through the air. The ground is moist, and spotted with small puddles.
Two heavily-armored men, PFC CONROY and PVT WIGGINS, are dragging a makeshift stretcher behind them with a third man, PVT ORTIZ, laying on it.
